Backstory (spoilers)

Wenna Lampwick comes of the drowned village. When the third village on Bogwater's spot went down into the mire, a girl of six was pulled out of the water clutching her mother's lamp, and the lamp was still lit. That was in YD 197. Wenna is of that girl's blood, seven generations down, and the lamp is the one on the altar of the Lamp Chapel. She took the Lamplighters' Oath at fifteen and serves as Brother Lumen's acolyte. She trims wicks, mends nets, and sings to the dying, and she can close a wound with a word and a touch, which in Bogwater is called 'lamp-hand' and is spoken of only half in jest. Brother Lumen keeps the chapel. Wenna wants to carry the light out of it. She has asked him three times for leave to go walking with someone who fights the dark, and three times he has said 'when someone worth walking with comes'. She waits in the Sodden Lantern with a lamp on the table, mending, and looking up whenever the door opens.
